How are we helping Calgary be resilient to future flooding events?

Perhaps the best way to talk about this is using an example. During the 2013 floods in southern Alberta, we were asked by the city of Calgary, one of our clients in the province of course, to help them the days, weeks, and months following the flood to help them with rebuilding some of their infrastructure and so on. It turned out, of course, that infrastructure wasn't resilient to the flood, so the city and province both commissioned us with providing them with designs that would be more resilient in the future and be able to absorb floods in the future.

One of the projects we're working on is the Springbank Dam project, which is a diversion on the Elbow River, which will take the peak flows during a flood, store them, and just lets them out at a very slow rate over a long period of time. With the math that we've done and our design that we've done, we built that into our design and that resiliency is part of the feature we want to do on a more macro scale, like I was saying. Now there's micro resilient features that we've done down stream in the city of Calgary, the city of Medicine Hat, and so on, just armoring river banks and those kind of things.

You can't be 100% certain about anything, but I think we have a much greater certainty that we'll prevent the damages that we've seen in the last flood by doing these type of things. People understand the need to create something that withstand, we talked about, shocks and disturbances or unforeseen things that occur, whether it's a building or it's a dam project or whether it's a waste water treatment plant, that kind of thing.
