May 11, 2026

In this article, we speak with Smart Cities Dive about the 2026 SS4A funding deadline and why these grants are pivotal for local road safety

Cities and municipalities have just weeks left to apply for 2026 federal Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) funding. With the upcoming deadline quickly approaching, we spoke with Smart Cities Dive to discuss what makes SS4A such a valuable program for local municipalities, cities, metropolitan planning organizations, and other eligible applicants.

“This is a lifetime opportunity to apply,” said Jesse Mintz-Roth, senior associate and road safety specialist at Stantec, adding that applicants “need to act fast” given the U.S. Department of Transportation’s May 26, 2026, application deadline.

Mintz-Roth also shared what makes SS4A grant applications competitive and the types of funding applicants should look to explore given their current road and street safety initiatives and goals, highlighting the importance of historical crash data and community input.
