Logan Water partnership, in collaboration with Stantec, receives Infrastructure Project Innovation award

Australia’s first biosolids gasification facility

06/08/2023 QUEENSLAND, AU TSX,NYSE:STN

Logan Water Parternship, in collaboration with Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, Downer and WSP, has won the Infrastructure Project Innovation award at the Australian Water Awards for Australia’s first biosolids gasification facility. This award recognises innovative infrastructure projects demonstrating exceptional outcomes for the community and contributing to future sustainability.

The biosolids gasification facility not only reduces Logan City’s carbon footprint by 4,800 tonnes per year, but also addresses new regulations for a reduction in PFAS, persistent chemicals that do not break down and instead accumulate in water. Currently, Logan Water’s Loganholme Wastewater Treatment plant treats 34,000 tonnes of biosolids, a by-product of wastwater treatement, every year which was previously trucked to Darling Downs for disposal. The gasification plant dewaters sewage sludge in a centrifuge, passes it through thermal dryers, and then exposes it to high temperatures in a gasifier to produce a safe biochar—a high grade fertiliser that can be used in the agricultural sector or in building materials.

Contributing to sustainability, the benefit of this facility includes lowering wastewater treatment operating costs, reduces energy consumption, the destruction of persistent pollutants, and the production of a marketable biochar. The use of technology and innovation will significantly reduce the disposal of biosolids, saving about $500,000 AUD in operating costs for both the Council and the community annually.

“Logan Water has undisputedly led the way in bringing real change to the biosolids industry. This technology adds another option for water authorities seeking to address rising biosolids disposal costs, carbon reduction targets, and emerging contaminants such as PFAS,” said John Ciccotelli, Regional Director, Water for Stantec. “This gasification plant is truly a ground breaking and innovative project.”

Stantec has partnered with Logan Water for over ten years and to date, the partnership has received over thirty industry awards, including Australia’s first water treatment solution, which harnesses the power of the sun to address energy challenges.

“This award is great recognition for the hard work and perseverance of the Logan Water Partnership team to bring this innovative solution to life” said Natalie Muir, Regional Director, Environment and Geosciences. “Thanks to Logan Water for their vision and placing their trust in the partnership to deliver this new sustainable solution for Biosolids management—another great outcome for the community from this long-term partnership.”

This collaboration could not have been possible without our partners said John Ciccotelli, “We are very proud to be part of the team that has delivered this project and continue to refine and optimise its performance. Many thanks to our partners—Logan Water, Downer, and WSP.”
