12/06/2023 PERTH, AU TSX,NYSE:STN

Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, has appointed Carl Kopke as Regional Director, Energy & Resources for Australia. Carl brings over 25 years of experience in the construction and mining industries and with his inimitable experience in construction, engineering, and resources he is well suited to the role, having the ability to appreciate the combined perspectives of any project.

Carl reports to Ashok Sukumaran, Stantec Australia’s Country Leader, and will focus on pipeline growth, project delivery excellence, and business efficiencies, while increasing efforts in growing energy and energy transition—including critical battery minerals, helping get mining companies decarbonised to net zero, hydrogen technologies, and renewables—he wants to capitalise on the great work the team has done establishing Stantec in the market, and accelerate targeted business outcomes.

“I’m excited to have Carl join our executive leadership team. He’s an action-oriented leader with strong commercial acumen, tackling complex business challenges and making strategic decisions when it matters. Our energy and resources business is poised for a period of significant activity amidst the backdrop of the energy transition and the increasing need for critical metals and minerals. With his vision to shape our services I’m in no doubt he’ll more than meet the needs of our clients as we enter this next phase of growth,” says Ashok Sukumaran.

Carl is determined to maintain the healthy workplace culture at Stantec. “I’m a firm believer that if staff are happy, project deliverables are superior. I want my people to have exciting projects to work on, that they have plenty of opportunities for professional and personal development, and the younger cohort are safely supported. I’m going to ensure Stantec’s systems and processes are working really well so there’s no hold-ups on delivering to clients.”

Beginning his career in mining and construction, it was soon apparent Carl was destined for leadership roles. He rapidly moved into operational management and not long after, corporate management, which he enjoyed for its complexity. It also finally gave him the chance to settle and establish himself in one community.

“I look forward to the challenges of the role and leading what is already a great national team. I’m confident that together we’ll achieve the outcomes we expect of each other and from the business. My strengths are in project delivery, operational management, and strategy development. I appreciate the opportunity the role brings to lead in an industry that is set on preserving our future,” says Carl.

Carl grew up in Kimberley, a mining city in South Africa, and started labouring in the mines. This sparked his interest in and entry into engineering, which progressed to mining and construction operational management, then consulting and strategy—the area he thrives in.
