Stantec receives Energy Transition Award from Mining Magazine

The Northern Goldfields Solar Project will provide fuel savings and reduce BHP’s emissions by approximately 540,000 tonnes of CO2e

Stantec, partnered with BHP and TransAlta, won the 2022 Mining Magazine Award for ESG and Energy Transition. They received the award for the Northern Goldfields Solar Project in Western Australia. The award recognises excellence in the areas of environmental, social, and governance and the energy transition in the mining industry and strongly reflects Stantec’s ongoing commitments to sustainability.

The Northern Goldfields Solar Project was initiated under a power purchase agreement between BHP Nickel West and TransAlta. The goal is to provide fuel savings and reduce BHP’s scope 2 electricity greenhouse gas emissions from its Leinster and Mount Keith nickel mines by 540,000 tonnes of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) over the first 10 years of operation.

“Using renewable energy introduces new challenges, but it’s critical for the mining industry to reduce emissions and create green energy,” said Wayne Peel, Stantec’s regional director for Energy & Resources, Australia. “As the world looks to reduce fossil fuel use, the demand for mining grows due to the amount of metals and minerals needed to produce and use clean energy. We were excited to work on this project that sets the stage for large-scale renewable energy and energy storage at mine sites.”

The Northern Goldfields Solar Project includes a 27.4-megawatt Mount Keith solar farm, a 10.7-megawatt Leinster solar farm, a 10.1-megawatt / 5.4-megawatt-hour Leinster battery energy storage system, and interconnecting transmission infrastructure. This renewable energy system will integrate into TransAlta’s 169-megawatt Southern Cross Energy North remote network.

This renewable energy project is the first solar photovoltaic build in Australia for TransAlta and the first large-scale onsite solar farm and battery that BHP has commissioned. It supports BHP’s emissions reduction targets—delivering lower-carbon, sustainable nickel to its customers. The project also provides a platform to further support the mining industry’s decarbonization efforts.

The Northern Goldfields Solar Project builds on Stantec’s ongoing efforts with the energy transition. In 2021, the firm committed to reaching carbon neutrality by 2022 and net zero global operations by 2030.
