Traffic and transport planning to ensure smooth travel experiences for stakeholders, attendees, and athletes alike
What does it take to pull off one of the largest sporting events in the Southern Hemisphere? We’ve been involved in transport planning for the Australian Open every year since 2001, and have an in-depth knowledge of the precinct, operation and issues.
The Australian Open is a tennis tournament held annually at Melbourne Park. This two-week event attracts thousands of tourists to Melbourne and huge crowds into the city, who need to move to, from, and around the event safely and efficiently. Developing the traffic and transport plans includes reviewing other plans in and around the precinct, auditing plans, and the installation, operation, and removal of temporary arrangements. We also chair the Transport Committee on behalf of Tennis Australia, which is made up of key stakeholders who are involved in the overall transport strategy for the event.
Planning for the event is no easy feat, with high pedestrian movements, use of public transport, high number of stakeholders, and the changing nature of the event each year. Plans need constant refinements to ensure they’re meeting the needs of all attendees, no matter what the event brings on the day. We’re proud that for the past 20+ years, tennis fans from near and far have enjoyed the Australian Open without thinking how they will safely get to, from, and around the event.
