Children and young people consistently tell us they want to walk, ride, or scoot to school. Yet across Australia, active travel has declined in recent decades. This shift contributes to poorer health outcomes, increased traffic congestion, and more stressful school‑gate conditions for families and communities.
To help address this trend, Austroads engaged our team to develop the Travel to School Guideline to support better transport planning at new and existing schools across Australia and New Zealand. The Guideline provides practical, evidence‑led advice for those planning, designing, and managing school travel.
Working closely with Austroads and their task forces representing member agencies, we developed the Guideline through a review of national and international best practice, alongside consultation with education, transport, and local government partners. This work identified key challenges, assembled case studies, and produced practical tools to support effective outcomes.
The result is a structured, nationally consistent approach to planning and designing school travel across a wide range of settings. It includes a step‑by‑step, community‑informed transport assessment process that brings local knowledge into decision‑making.
The Guideline supports safer, healthier, and more sustainable travel by improving options for primary and secondary schools, encouraging active travel, and supporting appropriate driving and parking where needed. It also helps practitioners plan and deliver transport infrastructure and behaviour change initiatives suited to local context.
The Travel to School Guideline and supporting research reports are available through the Austroads website.
