BlueScope Steel wanted to increase production capacity, improve product quality, and support demand for steel plate, including wind tower applications, at their Port Kembla plate mill. Their Advanced Steel Manufacturing Precinct project includes a new walking beam reheat furnace, a fourth processing route, and upgrades to plant infrastructure, delivered within a live operating environment.
We supported BlueScope through a blended delivery model, embedding structural engineers within the client team while also providing civil, structural, and geotechnical services from our Wollongong office. This approach enabled strong coordination across multiple workstreams and responsive technical support throughout design and construction.
We led civil and structural engineering design, coordinated multidisciplinary interfaces, and delivered key work packages aligned with project and safety requirements. Our team developed scopes, technical specifications, and design solutions, and supported procurement, contractor coordination, and construction delivery. Active involvement on site supported quality outcomes and timely resolution of technical challenges.
Working within a complex brownfield environment, we adapted designs and construction approaches to suit site constraints while maintaining ongoing operations. Close collaboration and clear communication helped us manage risk and keep delivery on track.
The project enhances BlueScope’s production capability, reduces rework, and improves throughput, positioning the Port Kembla facility to meet future demand and support long-term growth.
