Delivering contaminated land fieldwork in a challenging, remote landscape
When our client wanted to convert a remote site into a training facility, they first needed to assess the safety of the land for this use. They engaged our contaminated land management team to provide detailed contamination and geotechnical assessments of a 300,000 hectare greenfield site comprised of several bushland and cattle grazing properties.
Our team investigated the site for naturally occurring asbestos (NOA) and naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) associated with certain geological formations across the site. We also investigated conventional chemical contaminants associated with former cattle dips and fuel storage areas. Throughout the different stages of our investigation, we drilled hundreds of boreholes to accommodate our chemical and geotechnical assessments. With the site being so large and remote, we overcame many logistical challenges including safety, which was a significant factor and required carrying out precautions such as implementing a rule for a minimum of two four-wheel drive vehicles travelling together.
With our recommendations for further investigation in hand, the client can consider works that will ultimately keep the site safe for future site workers and visitors alike.
