Deakin University Travel and Transport Strategy

Deakin University has four campuses in Victoria, each vastly different in its population, building density, accessibility, and surrounding land uses. They also have a set of overarching sustainable aspirations, including reducing the carbon footprint associated with people accessing and travelling between campuses.

Our team was engaged to investigate how people accessing and travelling between campuses could do so more sustainably into the future. We reviewed current and future arrangements at each campus and benchmarked them against other universities in Victoria around urban factors that influence travel behavior to help understand what future mode shares could be achieved. To realise more sustainable mode shares for each campus, we developed a more tactical approach to the development and delivery of measures that help nudge travel behaviour. Our resulting travel and transport strategy reflected the fast-changing environment of University campuses while continuing to create a high-quality user experience for students, staff, and visitors.

The findings were used to develop a set of initial transport management measures, as well as outline the potential capital and operational cost savings that could be expected if more sustainable travel behaviours were achieved.
