With increasing demand for graduates in science and healthcare fields, Edith Cowan University (ECU) wanted to build a learning environment that would give students access to professional laboratories and the latest technologies. With a goal to provide a safe, flexible, and future-ready space where students could gain practical experience and researchers could pursue new discoveries, they engaged us to help.
Our electrical, hydraulic, vertical transportation, and fire protection engineers worked closely with the project team to design and deliver a five-storey science facility built to Australian safety standards. At the heart of the building are large-scale teaching laboratories that can accommodate up to 100 students at a time. Purpose-built benches that comply with physical containment level 2 (PC2) regulations, integrated services, and advanced structured cabling create adaptable learning spaces that can evolve alongside changing curricula, equipment, and research needs.
Safety and functionality were central to our design. Dedicated plant rooms allow maintenance to be completed without entering containment areas, while autonomous electrical systems support independent laboratory operation. Reticulated reverse osmosis water and non-potable water systems simplify laboratory processes while reducing long-term maintenance requirements. Throughout design and construction, our coordinated digital model helped support accurate delivery and the development of high-quality as-constructed documentation.
Today, the completed facility provides students and researchers with access to modern learning and research spaces. By fostering hands-on education, supporting scientific innovation, and attracting talent from around the globe, the building strengthens ECU's ability to prepare the next generation of scientists, healthcare professionals, and researchers who will benefit communities well into the future.
