Garden Island – Critical Infrastructure Recovery Works

Located approximately 2 kilometres north-east of Sydney’s central business district, the Stage Two upgrade works of the Critical Infrastructure Recovery Project are located at the Garden Island Defence Precinct. Aimed to improve the condition of critical dry dock and wharf structures across the precinct, the scope of engineering services included electrical, fuel, potable water, sea water, sewerage and compressed air work.

As a subconsultant to managing contractor Lendlease, our team provided base sewerage design services, including for a new sewer rising main, potable water and compressed air design, and coordinated water services.

Split into 11 work elements, beginning with base electrical supply and engineering services, the work progressed through to seawall degradation and wharf subsidence upgrades, fuel, dock wall repairs, sewer work, potable water, and replacement seawater infrastructure.

A technical assessment report was also produced by our team for the Captain Cook Graving Dock, which covered condition, compliance, reliability and resilience works. Our team focused on technical requirements and outcomes for the Dock, and comprised maritime, asset management and durability specialists.

Together, these works will strengthen the resilience, reliability and operational capability of the Garden Island Defence Precinct, extending the life of critical maritime assets. By upgrading essential services and addressing structural degradation, the project supports sustained naval readiness while delivering a safer, more efficient and future-ready base for Australia’s defence operations.
