Port Coogee, hailed as the new southern gateway to Fremantle, was primed to feature a new residential development. The Marina Edge Oceanfront Apartments’ 109 units would be arranged over nine storeys to make the most of the much-desired marina, coast, and ocean views.
Though ideal for living, an oceanfront site does not come without its challenges, so our team was engaged to provide structural design services. As the lower three storeys would form a podium and house internal parking, the presence of karstic limestone in the soil required high-tech grout injection techniques to avoid more expensive piled footings. A proprietary prefabricated wall system was specified to self-span over the voids and act as deep beams to eliminate the cost of transfer elements. The proximity to the ocean also necessitated the use of special protective coatings on all exposed steel; epoxy resins were employed to protect from exposure to the salts and chlorine found in sea spray.
In the end, creative structural solutions resulted in the idyllic and resilient Marina Front community—now featuring six storeys of residential apartments with beautiful coastal views.
