Mater Hospital Springfield Stage 2 is a major expansion of the existing hospital, designed to address rapid population growth and the increasing need for public healthcare in Brisbane’s western corridor. Delivered in partnership between Mater and the Queensland Government, the project is being constructed by John Holland, with Stantec providing structural and civil engineering services.
Our involvement builds on our Stage 1 role, where we delivered the design of the original private hospital—allowing us to integrate Stage 2 seamlessly and provide value engineering solutions alongside John Holland. This included redesigning suspended slabs as post-tensioned concrete, achieving significant time and cost savings. When steel procurement delays threatened the program, we re-engineered the Level 10 roof as post-tensioned concrete, securing further project efficiencies and maintaining momentum.
The new nine-storey structure will extend the hospital’s capacity to 234 beds, with facilities that include an emergency department, intensive care unit, outpatient services, maternity care, and six operating theatres. We also designed a central energy plant to support future growth.
More than just an infrastructure project, the expanded hospital will bring critical services closer to home for the Greater Springfield community. By mid-2026, the region will have access to an integrated public and private hospital, with the capacity to expand further to meet future needs—supporting a healthier, more resilient community.
