The new Footscray Hospital is one of Victoria’s largest health infrastructure investments, delivering expanded, future-ready healthcare to Melbourne’s west. Replacing the original 1950s facility, the 180,000-square-metre campus significantly increases capacity and capability for the growing region.
We provided mechanical, electrical, communications, hydraulics, fire protection, fire engineering, acoustics, vertical transportation, and specialty lighting. We also provided transport planning and design advice on the site’s access including the new signalised access points. Our integrated design approach supported clinical functionality, patient comfort, and long-term operational performance. We also helped design the hospital in a way that would enable future electrification, supporting Victoria’s transition to net zero emissions by 2050.
The hospital offers more than 500 inpatient beds—an increase of 200—along with expanded emergency, acute and specialist services, surgical theatres, MRI facilities, and Victoria’s first fully public pathology service. Community-focused amenities include retail, food and beverage spaces, childcare and allied health facilities, creating a civic heart for the precinct. More than 20,000 square metres of the site has been dedicated to courtyards, terraces, and winter gardens to support patient wellbeing and staff efficiency.
Now open, the new Footscray Hospital will treat almost 15,000 more patients, annually. Additionally, it will enable around 20,000 additional people to be seen by the emergency department each year to support the thriving western suburbs.
