Upgrading a busy intersection to better serve its community

The signalised intersection at North Ward Road and Palmer Street in Townsville needed upgrading. Located in a busy restaurant and stadium precinct, the focus of this upgrade was improving vehicle and pedestrian safety features. The Department of Transport and Main Roads called on our local team to undertake the redesign and modification of this intersection.

Our scope included path and cyclist upgrades, carpark modifications, public utility plant works and significant underground services impacts, lighting reviews, signal design, and stormwater modifications. The upgrades tied into newly installed cycle and pedestrian infrastructure towards Queensland Country Bank stadium and included removal of a lefthand slip lane and replacement with a new lefthand auxiliary lane. We worked around design limitations, such as existing property encroachment into road corridors and restrictions from adjacent bridges, to deliver the best outcome for vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists.

When completed, the upgraded intersection will allow the community to safely move around this community hub, whether on four wheels, two wheels, or two feet.
