Sensitively integrating essential leisure facilities into park landscape

Parramatta Aquatic Centre

The growing population in Sydney’s west, saw the City of Parramatta undertaking redevelopment in the May’s Hill precinct. The old War Memorial Swimming Centre was demolished in 2017 and a new aquatic centre was required. The vision for the project creates a new 50m outdoor pool, 25m indoor pool, learn to swim amenities, café, fitness centre and car parking for visitors.

The sensitive integration of the facility within the parkland setting resulted in the development being set down into the topography to allow the significant landscaped views to be maintained. The striking design defined by a central ring enables the 50m pool to be observed from the park’s walkways. The lower level indoor pools enjoy uninterrupted views of the central pool.

Stantec is engaged to provide all engineering disciplines including Structural, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Hydraulic, ESD, Acoustic, Fire Protection & Fire Engineering. We explored various sustainable initiatives such as rainwater harvesting and solar energy systems as part of a fully coordinated design in REVIT.
