Port Macquarie Airport Terminal Upgrade

An upgrade to the terminal building at the Port Macquarie Airport had become a necessity to accommodate for increased passenger numbers. The client embarked to redevelop the building to provide high quality terminal facilities that would lead to a more contemporary, comfortable, and efficient passenger experience.

Our team was engaged to deliver the major upgrade which would include structural and civil engineering along with all services—acoustics, audio visual, electrical, hydraulics, and mechanical. We needed to upgrade the airport while maintaining full operation which proved to be a logistical challenge while completing the engineering works. To do so, construction was staged—we worked on one half of the building while passengers utilized the other half, then swapped to the remaining half. As the existing steel trusses of the structure were rusting, our scope also ended up including remediation. We also designed a new façade introducing noise control for aircraft as well as minimizing echo noise from rainfall that had been bothersome.

Though the project had a modest budget, it was supported by contributions from both the New South Wales and Australian governments. We were able to support the client’s vision, contribute some of the funds required, and deliver the upgrade on time.
