Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH) uses the Radiopharmaceutical Production and Development (RAPID) Laboratories to produce radiopharmaceuticals for PET scanning of cancer and neurological conditions at their WA PET Centre. They appointed our team to assist with a major redevelopment of this facility, which included a new laboratory and a second cyclotron machine to increase the production of radiopharmaceutical products.
We worked with SCGH and equipment manufacturers to provide design services for structural, electrical, fire, mechanical, and hydraulics systems. We were also responsible for the laboratory gases supply, radiation/environmental monitoring systems, and integration of the base-building water, sanitary drainage, and stormwater systems.
Careful coordination was required to integrate all services with existing buildings and the new facility into the active health campus, maintaining services to the existing adjacent cyclotron and hot cells, while limiting interruptions to other facilities within the campus. In particular, we had to work out how to move the new cyclotron unit into place. This required liaising with the SCGH physicists for the design of a robust concrete bunker that would fully shield all personnel from radiation during construction and after handover.
SCGH’s improvements to the RAPID Laboratories facility have enabled the manufacture of radiopharmaceuticals in Western Australia, safeguarding the ongoing supply of stock for communities in the state. The facility complies with Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) guidance.
