Performing risk inspections to provide recommendations for remedial work

As a part of our client’s slope risk management system, they needed to conduct regular field inspections of rail embankments and cuttings along their rail network. They reached out to our team to help.

After establishing our field program, we then created a custom-built geographic information systems (GIS) field data capture system. This included a live calculation of slope risk compared to the client’s risk assessment framework, which provided instant feedback to field engineers and geologists, permitting sense checking, and indicating the need for further investigations where needed.

In addition to helping calculate slope risk, our field data capture included rail defects, culvert sizing and condition, and records of past stabilisation works. Subsequently, we provided recommendations for remedial works, as appropriate, in line with the client’s internal work prioritisation and allocation systems.

Along with maintaining their rail network, these efforts give our client opportunities for continuous improvements to their overall risk assessment framework as well as peer review of their inspection records and outcomes.
