Creating community focused wharf upgrades

Sydney Harbour Ferry Wharf Upgrades LCVIA Support

Six Sydney Harbour ferry wharves—Taronga Zoo, North Sydney, Double Bay, Darling Point, and Greenwich Point—were due for upgrades to address ageing infrastructure, improve accessibility, and meet evolving community expectations. Transport for NSW engaged our Community Development Urban Planning team to deliver comprehensive landscape character and visual impact assessments (LCVIA) as part of the review of environmental factors (REF).

We undertook detailed view analyses from adjacent properties, key vantage points, and streetscapes, supported by photomontages illustrating the anticipated changes. Through these studies, we identified potential visual impacts and recommended mitigation strategies to preserve local amenities. Our scope also included a thorough evaluation of heritage values, urban context, and the sensitivity of the existing character.

Transport for NSW used the assessment to guide the design process, keeping upgrades focused on respecting and enhancing the distinctive landscape character and visual qualities of each site. By embedding sustainable, inclusive, and context-sensitive design throughout, Transport for NSW can deliver on their vision for a connected, resilient, and future-ready harbour network.
