Teddy Ebersol’s Red Sox Fields

Stantec’s Sport Group provided the renovation and reorganization of three worn-out, natural grass baseball fields located at historic Olmsted Park along Boston’s Esplanade on the Charles River. This major field reconstruction project, on behalf of the Boston Red Sox, honors Teddy Ebersol, a young Red Sox fan who died in a plane crash, by providing beautifully enhanced community recreational space.

We designed the reorganization, repair, and revitalization of the baseball/softball diamonds and several youth soccer fields to flexibly accommodate a variety of other athletic and community uses. The improvement plan also included a state-of-the-art lighting system, a new irrigation system, water fountains, portable bleachers, and a manual scoreboard inspired by the one on the Green Monster at Fenway Park.

We worked with the community to assure that our design incorporated community needs. Our graphics team provided a series of plans and photo simulations that assisted with both fundraising and the public approval process for this private/public partnership sponsored by the Massachusetts EOEA, DCR, the Esplanade Association, Hill House, and The Red Sox Foundation.
