Working to reduce carbon emissions with a Walk and Ride plan

Located in Perth’s suburbs, about 12 kilometres south of Perth, and east of the port city of Fremantle, the City of Melville was looking to encourage people to get out of their cars and try walking or cycling instead. The City engaged us to undertake a Walk and Ride plan. Covering an area of approximately 53 square kilometres, the plan comprises 18 suburbs across 6 wards—that’s a big distance to cover on a bicycle or by foot. That’s why we worked to develop accessible walking and cycling paths over the large area.

The Walk and Ride plan included neighbourhood implementation plans to capture the differing characteristics and needs of each neighbourhood, whether people chose to walk or ride their bikes. Our plan recognised the different purposes of travel, whether people walk or ride for leisure, to access employment, or to visit community facilities. The plan requested community feedback on the proposed long term cycle network to identify routes that needed changing. We also enlisted feedback to identify the need for additional critical routes, facilities, or infrastructure that could facilitate active travel.

Promoting the use of active travel by creating safe and efficient routes, the Walk and Ride plan also works to reduce carbon emissions by enabling people to go by foot or bicycle instead of by car.
