UNC Health Rex North Carolina Heart and Vascular Hospital Design Services
Every second is crucial when the heart is distressed. To improve cardiac care and treatment within their community, UNC Health Rex in Raleigh set out to establish the North Carolina Heart and Vascular Hospital. They engaged our team of healthcare planners and designers to help.
The overall aesthetic for the hospital balances rapid medical response and advanced technology with a calming environment. Upon a patient’s arrival, the high-tech exterior conveys a promise of quality modern healthcare, while the curved form offers a warm welcome. A healing garden, linked paths, and courtyards blend the modern facilities with the serene landscape.
To improve efficiency, we incorporated lean design principles throughout. The two hybrid procedure rooms accommodate minimally invasive procedures and are equipped with advanced imaging systems. We set up catheterization labs to operate in the same-hand position in relation to their control room, giving the physician a clear side-view of the patient, optimizing time and performance. Oversized elevators improve case cart turn-around times, making sterile supplies readily available.
The project also included the Conference Center for Innovation and Learning, which accommodates more than 200 people. It primarily supports academic teaching programs but can also be used for events, including nutrition lessons with the executive chef at the demonstration kitchen.
With the new North Carolina Heart and Vascular hospital, UNC Health Rex has gathered top specialists in one location to treat the Raleigh community and also provide education on how to lead heart-healthy lives.
