Stantec, a leading global design and engineering firm, has welcomed a strategic addition to its Transportation team in the Mid-Atlantic region. Hitendra (Hiten) Patel, PE, former deputy chief of construction and design engineering with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), has joined as a principal and program manager.

Based in Laurel, Maryland, Patel will help manage and grow Stantec’s Transportation and Transit practices across the Mid-Atlantic, while also lending expertise in construction and systems engineering on many of Stantec’s large, complex transit projects throughout the US. With more than 30 years’ transit experience, Patel brings extensive knowledge in managing challenging infrastructure construction and rehabilitation projects, as well as applying innovative approaches.

“Hiten brings deep expertise in planning, design, and construction of rail systems, managing multifaceted projects and teams,” said Simon Simon, senior principal at Stantec. “This experience, coupled with his longstanding knowledge of the local landscape, aligns perfectly with our strategy for ongoing growth in supporting regional needs for infrastructure upgrades and renewal.”

During his decades at WMATA, Patel was instrumental in delivering improvements in safety, reliability, and customer service throughout the authority’s metro system.

Among key projects, he managed the development and implementation of a comprehensive 20-year, $8 billion system infrastructure renewal program to enhance the safety and efficiency of the aging system. Patel also launched WMATA’s weekend station shutdowns plan and cultivated public acceptance of such major construction activities. Additionally, he developed, executed, and managed numerous substantial line and station rehabilitation contracts to successfully maximize construction efficiencies, and effectively directed $300 million in annual capital program spending consecutively for six years.

Patel holds a master of science in construction engineering and management from the University of Maryland; a degree in financial business management from Bhavan's University in Mumbai, India; and a bachelor of engineering in civil engineering from Saurastra University in Gujarat, India. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Maryland and is a Certified Construction Manager.
