Stantec’s Project Engineer, Fritha Bevin-McCrimmon has won the title of 'Rising Star’ at the 2018 Women in Science & Engineering (WISE) Awards.

The WISE Awards were established to recognise inspiring individuals and organisations who are actively working to address the core concerns of WISE: promoting STEM to girls and women.

Project Engineer Fritha grew up in Dunedin, New Zealand and moved to Christchurch to study engineering at the University of Canterbury. The beginning of her career coincided with the 2011 earthquakes which had a devastating impact on the infrastructure of Christchurch. Fritha was able to put her studies immediately into practice and support the rebuild of the city.

Now based in Newcastle, UK, Fritha has been recognised by the awards for actively encouraging the next generation to pursue a career in science, maths and other related subjects and facilitating events such as the ‘Women in Engineering day’ for Year 7 girls at Newminster Middle School in Morpeth, UK.

Judges said: “The winner of the Rising Star Award has a community perspective and doesn’t just focus on engineering.” Speaking about Fritha, the judges added that “She has a strong objective approach with a mix of education and corporate responsibility.”

UK Head of Engineering, Craig Gerry said "It is fantastic to see Fritha recognised for her outstanding and passionate contribution to WISE. Inspiring young women to consider a career in engineering and the opportunities that exist for them is important for our industry and Stantec. She should feel very proud of this recognition, very well done."
