Global transit expert James Purkis joins Stantec as Transit Leader

Large-scale and international public and private sector experience will further strengthen the firm’s transit practice services

Stantec has announced that James Purkis has joined the Company as Transit Leader within the Transportation Business Line. Based in Kelowna, BC, James will focus on growing Stantec’s transit business, working closely with leaders across North America and globally.

James most recently lent his expertise to the British Columbia Ministry of Transport & Infrastructure, where he supported the development of major projects, including overseeing design, procurement, and construction.

“James Purkis has seen it all in transit – from limited budgets in the United Kingdom to unrelenting growth in China – he understands the transit business inside and out,” said Rod Schebesch, Senior Vice President, Sector Leader, Transportation. “We’re delighted he has decided to join Stantec for the next stage of his career. James’s addition will elevate our technical delivery and transit services, applying the vast experience he has gained through international markets.”

Originally from the United Kingdom, James moved abroad shortly after graduating from university to seek opportunities in other countries. Since then he has worked in transportation in fifteen countries all over the world, including in Europe, Asia, and North America. Over the past three decades, he has run major programs, set up Alstom’s business in China, and evolved his focus from engineering design to developing, growing, and operating businesses.

Before moving to British Columbia, James spent two years at Metrolinx as Executive Vice President of Capital Projects for the Regional Express Railway.

“For me, transportation is about connecting people and place,” said James. “At the end of the day, that’s what transit is about, and I’m very excited to join the dynamic team Stantec has in place, and to help them continue to grow a successful practice.”

A mechanical engineer by training, James has become a generalist as he developed his core strength of building transportation systems around the world. While he counts Singapore as a personal favourite place he has lived, Kelowna charmed him enough to make interior British Columbia his new home.
