Stantec Architect Samantha Markham named Outstanding Mentor

National award honors five dedicated to guiding the next generation of design/construction professionals

Stantec architect Samantha Markham has been named a 2019 ACE-ENR Outstanding Mentor by the ACE Mentor Program of America and Engineering News-Record. Markham is one of five recipients of the national award, handed out last night at the ACE 25th Anniversary Celebration in National Harbor, Maryland.

The ACE (Architecture, Construction, Engineering) Mentor Program pairs high school students with professionals from the design and construction industry, inspiring the students to pursue ACE careers. Students and mentors meet weekly for approximately four months, focusing on hands-on activities, tours and field trips.

“It’s a tremendous honor to be selected for this award and to represent our group on the national level,” Markham said. “ACE is a team sport and no one person could make this happen. I’m so excited about the growth of the Plano/Frisco chapter. Previously, our Stantec office hosted the program—but this year it was too big. That’s an amazing accomplishment!”

As a young professional with five years of experience, Markham coordinates the North Dallas (Plano/Frisco) chapter of the Dallas/Fort Worth ACE Mentor affiliate. Markham helped start the North Dallas chapter in 2014 and has been a major driving force as the chapter has grown from 10 to 90 students. More than 90% of the North Dallas students complete the mentor program. One of Markham’s signature efforts was helping create the affiliate’s most popular activity, The Amazing ACE Race, with fellow Stantec ACE mentor Alayna Skorge.

In addition to Markham’s efforts with the ACE Mentor Program, she is a project architect in Stantec’s Plano office, most recently working on a multiple schools, including three elementary schools for the Highland Park Independent School District. She currently serves as the Director of Education for AIA Dallas and previously served as Chair of the AIA Dallas Women in Architecture and Vice Chair and Chair of the Architecture Matters committee. She was named AIA Dallas Young Architect of the Year in 2016, received an AIA Dallas Presidential Citation in 2017, and is an active blogger about architecture (www.theaspiringarchitect.com).
