Stantec and Yorkshire Water win Institution of Civil Engineers, Sir John Fowler Award

The Strategic Drainage Management Plan Pilot scheme is a potential game changer

04/01/2019 LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM TSX, NYSE:STN

Yorkshire Water’s Strategic Drainage Management Plan (SDMP) Pilot scheme, delivered by Stantec, has taken home the Sir John Fowler Award for research projects and feasibility studies, at the ICE Yorkshire and Humber Awards 2019.

The SDMP Pilot has provided the foundation for Yorkshire Water to enhance drainage planning and engagement across Yorkshire Water’s region in the next investment period 2020-2025 and beyond.

The scheme identified the needs of diverse stakeholders and developed catchment solutions, to create multiple benefits. Whilst developing an underpinning framework for drainage management plans, it created routines to provide insight across the whole of the region.

Comments from the judging panel included:

“This study is an excellent example of the very practical benefits of the use of "big data" to model the impacts of criteria such as changes in population, development and climate on drainage capacity.”

“The results are already generating interest from the regulator and other water companies and have the potential to be a game changer in the way our water drainage assets are developed and managed.”

Stantec’s Tim Clay, project technical lead and Chris Dixon, technician, were presented with the award at the ICE annual ceremony which took place at Sheffield City Hall on March 15.

After the event, Tim Clay said “I was speaking with one of the interview panel after we had won the award and she commented that it was the best nomination that she had seen for this award in many years. It was fantastic to receive such great feedback and recognition from the ICE for our innovative work on this project.”
