Reed Ellis

Vice President, Bridges

Photo of Reed

Reed has a comprehensive knowledge of bridge engineering, with expertise in the full spectrum of bridge practice—from inspections to design, rehabilitation, and construction management. He’s developed bridge management systems and training courses for transportation agencies across the world. Because of this, Reed is often sought after to provide expert opinion and reports for accident and other investigations.

Recently, Reed led the investigation of the fracture and partial collapse of the Diefenbaker Bridge, a 300-meter (1,000-foot), fracture-critical, steel-girder bridge. There, he led the development of a repair, load testing, and structural monitoring program to restore the bridge to service and then mitigate the likelihood of a repeat fracture occurring. Reed has performed constraint-induced fracture (CIF) assessments for various transportation departments.

A constant proponent of education and mentorship, Reed served as an external Ph.D. examiner for a doctoral thesis entitled “An Investigation of Methodologies to Determine the Most Sustainable Bridge Work Programs.” He’s also sponsored a number of internal R&D projects for Stantec including the development of optimized UHPC bridge deck systems for movable bridges and a civil infrastructure condition assessment with unmanned aircraft systems.
