Michael’s principal areas of specialization include stream and wetland mitigation banking, stream impact assessments and compensation, stream restoration design and construction implementation, stream and wetland monitoring, avoidance, minimization, and compensation for impacts to natural resources, interpretation and application of federal and state regulations. He’s designed and supervised the construction of numerous stream restoration projects, designed wetland restoration projects, and collected data for and monitored stream and wetland restoration projects.

Michael was formerly the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality’s (DEQ) lead stream compensation and restoration expert. He was a key participant in the development of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and DEQ’s Unified Stream Methodology, which assesses stream impacts and stream compensation requirements and credits. He also developed the DEQ’s Stream Impact and Compensation Assessment Manual.
