Stuart Lerner

Stu has more than 30 years of experience in transportation infrastructure engineering, and is an acknowledged leader not only within Stantec, but throughout the industry. A visionary, Stu keeps a watchful eye on the future of community infrastructure, promoting solutions that embrace sustainability, such as building to accommodate autonomous vehicles and the other game-changing innovations that will change the way our cities and towns live, work and play.

Stu formerly led Stantec’s Transportation business, including the Company’s transit, road, rail, bridge, and non-motorized transportation activities in North America.

Through his involvement in hundreds of projects, from planning through construction, delivered via design-build, public-private partnerships, and conventional design-bid-build, Stu has become an expert in managing complex projects to meet demanding project completion timelines. 

A leader in the industry, Stu has served in multiple professional organizations, spoken at numerous professional events, and been published in several industry publications. He has a bachelor of civil engineering from Lehigh University and a master of science in civil engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology.

 

Stu is a senior vice president and business leader for our Transportation business line. He is responsible for managing Stantec’s road, bridge, transit, rail and non-motorized transportation activities throughout North America.

Stu’s experience in the transportation industry covers the range of a project’s life, from planning through construction. He has been involved in hundreds of projects, delivered through a variety of methods, from public private partnerships, to design-build, to conventional design-bid-build. Stu is known for his ability to manage complicated projects so that they meet the rigorous schedules established by the public/private entity funding the project. Stu served as overall lead on the transportation improvements associated with the Atlantic Yards project in Brooklyn, New York, for developer Forest City Ratner and is technical lead for a new tunnel under Hwy 401/409 in Toronto, Ontario, for Metrolinx.

In recent years, Stu has focused on growing Stantec’s involvement and investment in emerging technologies and trends. As an Envision Sustainable Professional (ENV SP), Stu recognizes the importance of designing infrastructure solutions that embrace sustainability, like building to accommodate connected or autonomous vehicles that are soon to be a widespread reality for travelers across North America.
