And that desire aligns with a new project that requires the full execution of the partnership: repowering two wind farms in southern Italy. That means replacing less modern parts or updating full turbines with more innovative technology.
An integrated approach between Castiello’s team and Tartari is critical.
Repowering wind farms for the future
“We’re installing new turbines with more capacity and better performance,” Tartari says. “The wind farms will have a combined capacity of 150 megawatts—enough electricity to power 120,000 households.”
Repowering wind turbines also reduces environmental and acoustic impacts that would result from the construction of new energy sources.
“Approvals for a project of this scope are diverse,” Tartari says. “Civil and electrical engineering, plus environmental services. Stantec’s international reputation means we’re using best practices in design and development.”

Solving for size in wind engineering and repowering regulations
There have been two challenges during the repowering design process. First, the sites were built for the smaller size of the original turbines—the new turbines are almost three times larger. And there are regulatory challenges to navigate due to frequently changing environmental requirements in Italy.
It was a collaborative approach that made our solutions possible.

We’ve integrated our environmental specialists into the design process. This has helped verify that our technical solution for the larger turbine size follows proper regulations. We’ve also had frequent alignment meetings throughout the early design phase and reviewed the entire layout of the wind farms through detailed site studies.
“We found new turbine positions to minimize civil work,” Castiello says. “And we integrated Sorgenia’s priorities and operational needs with the new positions.”
Partnership has been key in balancing schedule and budget constraints, as well as understanding client priorities and proactively addressing potential issues.
“Enza and her team are great at addressing issues immediately,” Tartari says. “They’ve optimized the design to manage environmental and financial concerns. We’re thrilled with their work.”
