Officially engineering Canada’s 150th anniversary

As Canada prepares to celebrate 150 years as a nation in 2017, Ottawa, Canada’s capital, is preparing a year full of activities to celebrate. As you can imagine, this is no small task. Stantec is proud to partner with the Ottawa 2017 Bureau and CIBC to become Ottawa 2017’s official engineering partner for the celebrations.

After all, at Stantec, we design with community in mind. What better way to give back to the Canadian community, than to partner with our nation’s capital and ensure this yearlong event goes off without a hitch.

“We’re excited that Stantec, an international design firm with strong Canadian roots, has partnered with Ottawa 2017 to help shape a full year of celebrations in the nation’s capital for Canada’s 150th anniversary,” said Mayor Jim Watson. “Together, we will build exceptional and memorable experiences for residents and visitors from around the world.”

From big signature events that are designed to wow visitors and residents of Ottawa alike, to community celebrations that bring people together, Stantec is proud to help Ottawa 2017 execute their ambitious plans. By providing in-kind engineering and design services with Community Engagement funding to support the effort, Stantec’s commitment to the project will span the years 2015-2017.

“With a proven track record in building strong communities, the expertise that Stantec brings to the celebration planning is unparalleled,” said Guy Laflamme, Executive Director of the Ottawa 2017 Bureau. “Together, our growing foundation of Ottawa 2017 partners is creating momentum toward what promises to be an incredible year in the capital.”

An incredible year indeed.

Imagine a space dedicated to a succession of special exhibits, performing arts, and tributes to each of Canada’s provinces and territories. This is Inspiration Village. Stantec’s partnership will help create this unique visitor experience.

Red Bull Crashed Ice promises to be a winter highlight, with Stantec’s structural team providing pivotal engineering for the event by designing structures to modify and cover the existing locks where the iconic Rideau Canal meets the Ottawa River. We can’t wait to see the world class competitors fly down the custom designed course, all within view of Ottawa’s parliament hill and historic Chateau Laurier.

Ignite 150 promises a series of amazing stunts to wow participants throughout the entire year. From fine dining suspended 50 meters above ground, to yoga on a barge accompanied by a live orchestra, Stantec is excited to work with the city to help their vision become reality.

Events are being announced weekly, so stay tuned over the coming months to learn more about how Stantec and Ottawa 2017 are working together to make Canada’s 150th anniversary year unforgettable.
