Opening streets and minds

Carpinteria, Santa Barbara is on the road to a better, more active future

Always looking for avenues to do good, Stantec is an annual sponsor of the Open Streets program. Open Streets is a community-based initiative that encourages people to get out and get active. The streets close to cars and open for exclusively pedestrian recreation!

This year’s event took place on Saturday, April 1st, in Carpinteria, Santa Barbara. To help facilitate community outreach efforts, we donated our booth space to the local Engineers Without Borders (EWB) and American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

Joining forces to connect with future generations and promote careers in engineering, senior marketing specialists Aimee Wright and Mindy Fowler (Stantec) came together with ASCE and EWB representatives from local firms. Our team engaged passersby of all ages to discuss “what engineers do” and show them some of the cool projects we’ve worked on in the community.

We put the kids' science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) skills to the test by challenging them to make marshmallow and toothpick structures, as well as boats made of recycled materials. The strongest boat held 151 pennies!

With the kids telling us things like, "We want to stay at your booth and do more engineering!", we're confident this community event was a true success.
