Supporting Bow Valley College Rebuild
As the Bow River crested and water began filling the streets of downtown Calgary, mechanical engineer Miguel Burgos thought of our client, Bow Valley College, which sits only three blocks from the river’s bank. Stantec has been working with the college on their redevelopment project since 2006, forming a strong relationship. Miguel immediately called them. He wanted to make sure anyone dealing with the flooding that day knew what kind of mechanical systems they were dealing with.
Flooding impacted three levels of the parkade, along with the shipping and receiving area. Most of those areas were completely underwater. Fortunately, there was little damage to the floors above ground. In the following weeks, with the water pumped out, Miguel Burgos, George Henderson and Benjamin Ellah, were able to help assess the damage and the best options to have the whole building back to normal as soon as possible.
Working with the college and the contractors, the main levels of the campus were up and running only a month after the flood, but there was much more work to be done in the parkade that was submerged in the muddy waters of the Bow. Over the course of six months, Stantec worked to restore the parkade to its original state with new systems and pumps. Today, the parkade houses 210 parking stalls for downtown guests and students.
