" }Since the Tradewell Fellowship began, we have carried forward Gary Tradewell's vision of healing environments, collaborative design, mentorship, and knowledge sharing. Through guidance, project experience, and research opportunities, we help fellows connect ideas with practice and contribute to the future of healthcare design.
The national curator is responsible for mentoring the fellow throughout the year, helping coordinate project assignments, fellowship activities, and key program milestones. In addition to this support, the fellow works with a local curator, the Tradewell Committee, Stantec healthcare planners and designers, in-house researchers, and external advisors, including:
- D. Kirk Hamilton, PhD, FCCM, Emeritus FAIA & FACHA, EDAC (the founder and original curator of the Tradewell Fellowship program)
- Charles D. Cadenhead, Emeritus FAIA & FACHA, FCCM (long-time curator of the Tradewell Fellowship program)
Since 2000, Tradewell Fellows have contributed to healthcare planning and design through research, collaboration, and professional practice. Their work has helped shape a growing network of healthcare design professionals connected through the fellowship.

3. Can I apply if I am still in school?
Yes. You may apply while completing your studies, provided you meet the program’s education and eligibility requirements before the fellowship begins.
3. What will I do during the fellowship year?
Fellows work alongside healthcare planners and designers on real projects, explore research topics, build professional connections, and contribute to the healthcare design community through learning and knowledge sharing.
The Tradewell Fellowship offers a dynamic blend of project work, research, and professional development. Fellows spend the majority of their time working alongside senior planners and designers on healthcare projects while also leading an independent research initiative and participating in marketing efforts, charrettes, firm events, and attendance at a national healthcare conference.
4. Who supports fellows throughout the program?
Fellows receive guidance from a national curator, a local curator, the Tradewell Committee, Stantec healthcare planners and designers, in-house researchers, and external advisors. This network helps fellows gain experience, explore new ideas, and connect research with practice.
5. Will I have opportunities to conduct research?
Yes. Research is a key part of the fellowship. Fellows are encouraged to explore healthcare planning and design questions that align with their interests and contribute to the profession. Many fellows develop work that can be presented or published at the end of their program.
6. Will I be considered for employment after the fellowship?
The fellowship is a one-year position. During that time, Stantec may consider opportunities for continued employment based on business needs, mutual interests, qualifications, and available positions. Several past fellows have continued their careers with us, but future employment is not guaranteed.
7. Are international applicants eligible?
International applicants may apply if they meet the programs educational requirements and are authorized to work in the United States as mandated by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services for the contiguous 12-month period. Due to the defined timeframe of the Tradewell Fellowship, Stantec does not offer H-1B visa sponsorship for the program.
