Today we speak to Telecommunications Engineer Priya Behera, to learn how about her impact and passion that is contributing to our industry
Global day of the engineer (4 April) is an important event on Stantec annual calendar.
This year’s theme is Day in the Life of Engineers: Making Global Impact, and so we’re shining a light on some of our people who are at different stages of their career to understand more about their roles and passion for the industry.
And what better place than to start at the beginning. Telecommunications Engineer Priya Behera recently joined Stantec's Graduate program after completing her Master of Engineering degree at Melbourne’s La Trobe University.
“I applied for Stantec’s graduate program not knowing what to expect,” she said.
“It’s been a really great experience to be involved in. I’ve enjoyed working closely with my mentor and making a focussed effort to continually improve.”
Graduating with a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering, Priya works within Melbourne’s Telecommunications team and is involved in a range of projects across market sectors.
When asked about being a young woman in a male-dominated industry, Priya says her colleagues make her feel empowered and that strengthens her confidence.
“I’m treated exactly the same as the rest of my colleagues – I don’t feel different at all. “It’s great because I know they have confidence in my capabilities, and that gives me confidence,” she said.
“Ultimately, I want to be the best Stantec representative I can be, and the graduate program will definitely help me achieve that.”
While Priya admits she is excited about where her career in engineering will take her, for now she’s enjoying learning from her clients and peers.
“The biggest learning curve after graduating has been gaining real world experience; it’s not something you’re exposed to at university. That’s been the biggest learning curve,” she said.
“I’m just trying to take everything in, learn from the people around me and enjoy the ride.”
