The property industry, like every other industry, is under acute pressure to decarbonise. But a building’s carbon footprint can be supersized before a single light or air conditioner is switched on. Measuring and managing the built environment’s hidden emissions is mission critical, says expert Prasanna Suraweera. 

For the last decade or so, Australia’s property industry has predominantly focused on operational emissions. But embodied carbon—the sum of greenhouse gas emissions released during a building’s entire lifecycle—has been largely overlooked.

Measuring your full carbon footprint is a fundamental starting point to understanding your risk exposure, and it can’t be about ticking a box to attract investors. Measuring—and then managing emissions—ensures your business is risk-prepared and can survive in a future climate.
