The Great Canadian North, specifically the Kitikmeot region located in the western part of Nunavut, is a vast and remote area that is home to several Inuit communities. The region is also rich with critical mineral deposits—critical minerals that are necessary for the global energy transition. The local economy is primarily driven by natural resource extraction, including mining and exploration activities. But much of the region is nearly inaccessible due to a lack of infrastructure and extreme weather conditions. This lack of access limits the ability to mine in the region, as well as the local economy to do business with the rest of Canada and the world.
The Grays Bay Road and Port Project aims to solve this challenge for the Kitikmeot region. The goal? To create a nationally significant northern trade corridor, aiding Inuit and Canadian sovereignty and offering new opportunities by unlocking Canada’s critical minerals wealth and supporting the northern economy.
Brian Mashford and Arlen Foster were featured in International Mining to discuss the Grays Bay Road and Port Project, the need for strategic partnerships and community relations, and Stantec’s experience in leading large infrastructure projects with extreme weather conditions in remote areas.
