Assessing the use of a SWA for treating oil spills in Canada’s freshwater environments

Tanya Shanoff co-authors an article on treating oil spills in the International Journal of Environmental Sciences & Natural Resources
When it comes to treating oil spills, surface washing agents (SWA) have traditionally only been used in marine systems. But what if they could be used to remediate fresh water ecosystems as well?
In response to evidence that SWA might also be helpful in freshwater environments, Tanya Shanoff partnered with the International Institute of Sustainable Development – Experimental Lakes Area (IISD-ELA) and a group of industry peers to field test the efficacy of Corexit EC9580A™—a SWA—for removing weathered heavy oil from two physically different shoreline types in a freshwater boreal lake in Northwestern Ontario, Canada.
