“Change is not a four-letter word,” Joey Murphy recently told The Water Values Podcast during an interview about organizational change management. “It’s something that’s going to happen, so you want to get your people involved as soon as you know about it, and as often as you can.”
Joey appeared on the podcast to discuss the findings of a white paper that Stantec co-authored with Bluefield Research about organizational change management in the water industry. Speaking with host David McGimpsey, Joey explains why water and wastewater utilities shouldn’t overlook the importance of their people when incorporating new tools or technologies. Joey talks about the value of getting employee buy-in early, how to make sure a change sticks so employees don’t revert to previous routines, and why simply training staff on new techniques isn’t enough.
“When people understand the ‘why’ and they participate in the process, they take ownership of the outcomes,” said Joey. “Change stops being something that happens to them, and it becomes something they help create.”
