This article covers the journey of sustainability to resilience and how, looking forward, it is now about action to make a difference

Stantec Senior Vice President of Strategy David Smith and Chief Executive Officer of the United Kingdom’s (UK) Southern Water Ian McAulay review the journey from “sustainability to resilience to action” in their respective companies and why they want to inspire others to make this the decade of resilience and “rewilding.”

Why this decade is critical, and why we can’t afford to get it wrong.

There are unprecedented challenges that cities and communities around the world are facing, ranging from growth and densification, impacts from the Covid-19 pandemic, aging infrastructure, climate issues and increased frequency of drought and severe storms, to social issues like affordable housing and income disparity. There are immense opportunities for positive change through new technologies, ecosystem regeneration and holistic, joined-up thinking by city and community leaders.

This article covers the journey of sustainability to resilience and how, looking forward, it is now about action to make a difference. David and Ian reflect on the experience gained from establishing and running a not-for-profit Joint Venture [Heriot Watt University and Stantec] Company, carrying out research, advisory services, and knowledge sharing in sustainability and resilience.
