When the silos break down, connections between people and place grow
The categories that shaped our understanding of 20th Century society are dissolving away—from the subjects we studied at college to the way we work, study, and entertain ourselves. The wired digital technology revolution set this change in motion, but it’s also driven by a recognition of the benefits of being interconnected. Science research, it has been shown, is better when it’s multidisciplinary. Technology breakthroughs require multifaceted teams. Medical care is evolving to a seamless continuum. Even our traditional building types are becoming hybrids.
In our buildings practice, this age of intersection presents both challenges and opportunity. As we discuss in the new issue of the Design Quarterly, we are now called upon to assist communities and clients who want to break down their old less-than-ideal silos and embrace a new culture. Through thoughtful design, we help them adjust to the realignment taking place in their world, be it health, research, education, or industry.
As a global design firm, we actively work to break down our own silos. As discussed in Issue 04, we see unlimited opportunity to connect experts across our disciplines to drive innovation and creativity, to applying smart design and whole systems thinking, and to share our technical expertise with clients, policy influencers, and policy makers to drive for long-term global change.
We invite you to join us in exploring these emerging intersections in the Design Quarterly.
