Stantec’s Carmen Bernedo Sanchez discusses how engineers challenge the consequences of climate change with the American Society of Civil Engineers

Civil engineers are working hard to battle the outcomes of rising carbon emissions, such as droughts, floods, and rising sea levels. Stantec’s Carmen Bernedo discusses how these effects impact dams, stressing that “reservoir management needs to be agile”. Dams may need to be modified to keep up with emerging challenges.

Bernedo explains that “Dam and spillway retrofitting is one of the first options we need to think of when we want to come up with a mitigation or solution for climate change”. Stantec designed the Santa Anita Dam Spillway Modification Project, constructing a new spillway to combat flood risk for downstream communities. These precautions are critical to meeting the rising standards brought by climate change.
