New York City’s transit infrastructure—including Grand Central Terminal—is iconic. More than 300,000 daily commuters pass through Grand Central.
Senior principal and structural engineer Chris Yorlano shares insights from our team’s nearly 30 years of work on Grand Central projects. Over the decades, that work includes structural assessments, comprehensive inspections, and rehabilitations. All of this to keep more than 80 platform tracks moving people.
New York’s transit is always evolving. One of the more recent enhancements to the system is the new subway entrance at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. It’s a project that connects 10 subway lines and the Long Island Railroad. It dramatically improves access and reduces travel time for thousands of event-goers.
Chris explains some of the challenges of maintaining a transit system that is valued at $1.5 trillion, the need for ongoing investment, and the importance of upgrades that don’t disrupt service. He also reflects on the unique rewards of seeing the impact of these projects firsthand.
