Net zero emissions by 2050 is a worldwide goal. Yet, sustainable designs can’t be just an added service contribution, says Stantec’s Queensland Sustainability Section Manager Andrew Williams. According to the United Nations, seventy per cent of the world’s economies are accountable for two-thirds of global emissions and have given firm vows to accomplish carbon neutrality. The Climate Action 100+ group, which brings together 615 investment firms operating US$55 trillion in assets, is holding the world’s 100 biggest carbon emitters to account.

He adds some clients still see sustainability as just a 'tick-the-box exercise', leading to missed opportunities in sustainable strategies when a specialist sustainability consultant is not involved.

“Another critical misstep in the meaningful implementation of sustainability strategies is when a project does not include a specialist sustainability consultant,” he says, “The project team will turn up with a shopping list of sustainability initiatives, but little understanding of how each adds value or interacts with each-other.”
