Water Reuse
Creating fit-for-purpose water reuse treatment solutions
Around the world, communities are rethinking how they use water to help address climate change and increasing demand. At Stantec, we build potable and non-potable water reuse plans into larger sustainability and climate resilience strategies. We have adopted a One Water Cycle approach where we view drinking water, wastewater, stormwater, and natural water as a connected resource. Our teams help communities see the full picture of water use, treatment, and return to the environment.
Water quality is shaped by factors like local ecology, geology, agriculture, industry, and urban runoff. Because each community has their own water challenges, we work closely with clients to deliver tailored reclaimed water treatment options. Our teams use advanced technologies and decentralized systems to find solutions that fit local needs and budgets.
For inland communities, we’re exploring carbon-based treatments, finding new ways to manage brine, and providing customized desalination and advances in membrane technology. We’ve also supported challenging potable reuse programs, like the surface water augmentation project in San Diego, which allows treated recycled water to mix with a reservoir before further treatment.
Our guidance covers the entire project journey, from feasibility to full-scale implementation. Through our North American Funding Program, we have helped clients secure significant grants and loans to realize these projects.
At Stantec, we work to make water reuse a foundation for long-term water solutions that provide safe and reliable water for utility customers.
Engaging communities to build trust in water reuse
Public perception is crucial to successful water reclamation projects—and public outreach is a vital part of the process. We use demonstration facilities, engagement, and educational campaigns to build community trust and understanding. We’ve helped clients communicate the science, safety, and benefits of water reuse through tours, workshops, and transparent messaging. By aligning technical expertise with community values, our team supports regulatory approval and long-term public acceptance of advanced treatment solutions. Learn MoreShaping the standards that define the future of water reuse regulations
From agriculture and industry to potable supply, the potential for water reuse spans nearly every sector. Safe and effective reclaimed water requires robust regulatory frameworks. We’re at the forefront of shaping guidelines for water reuse in Arizona, Utah, and other communities where every drop counts. We actively contribute to national and regulatory policy around advanced treatment systems to support consistent delivery of a high-quality, fit-for-purpose water supplies. Learn MoreSmart water management for superior industrial performance
Our industrial water reuse services combine advanced water treatment design, reliability engineering, pilot testing, and strategies to reduce potable water demand by utilizing highly treated effluent for on-site applications. We help clients cut operational costs through water recovery, comply with regulations, reduce environmental impact, and maintain operational continuity with high-reliability systems. We can also work with you to explore more cost savings strategies like reduced water purchasing and wastewater discharge fees. Learn MoreInnovative advanced water treatment solutions for a more resilient future
We are committed to creating smart, sustainable solutions for transforming treated wastewater fit for any purpose. From early planning to full operations, we help communities tackle water scarcity and climate challenges. We’re advancing direct potable reuse, developing new treatment technologies, and finding better ways to manage brine. Our team has secured millions in funding for clients and built demonstration facilities across the United States to test and prove new ideas. Learn MoreMeet Our Team
