The City of Winnipeg, Manitoba, has approved an C$815.48 million contract with Red River Biosolids Partners for the construction of new biosolids facilities at the North End Wastewater Treatment Plant (NEWPCC). The consortium includes Aecon Group Inc., MWH Constructors Canada Ltd., and Oscar Renda Contracting of Canada Inc., a subsidiary of Southland Holdings, Inc. Stantec is leading design for the project.
The contract represents a milestone for the NEWPCC Upgrades, as construction is expected to begin in the coming weeks. The project will be delivered through a progressive design-build approach. During the project’s development phase, Red River Biosolids Partners worked collaboratively with the City to advance the design and refine project costs ahead of construction.
The NEWPCC is Winnipeg’s largest and oldest wastewater treatment facility, treating approximately 70 percent of the city’s wastewater and all the sludge generated from the city’s three wastewater treatment facilities. As the city continues to grow and regulatory requirements evolve, Winnipeg has invested in major infrastructure upgrades to help meet provincial wastewater and biosolids treatment standards.
The biosolids facilities will be built on a greenfield site using thermophilic digestion to sustainably treat sludge resulting from wastewater treatment. Once constructed, the facilities will turn wastewater sludge into pathogen-free, Class A biosolids that are safe to use as fertilizer.
