Cornerstone Fire Station is a new 24/7 emergency response facility serving Calgary’s growing northeast region. It demonstrates how essential civic infrastructure can deliver high performance with a lower environmental footprint.
Designed by Stantec in close collaboration with the City of Calgary, the station recently earned LEED Platinum certification. Design strategies integrated throughout the building support energy efficiency, long-term resilience, and responsible resource use, enabling the facility to one day achieve zero-carbon operations while creating a healthy environment for firefighters and staff.
The design’s contextual massing complements the surrounding neighborhood fabric, while a feature mass timber colonnade introduces a more prominent public-facing design gesture to highlight the elegant renewable material. Together, these elements create a civic landmark that connects sustainability, community identity, and firefighter well-being.
Cornerstone Fire Station shows how thoughtful design can help communities reduce the environmental impact of critical infrastructure while creating durable, high-performing spaces for the people who serve them. Early feedback from firefighters has been positive.
